Spring Time is Termite Time

It’s Early April and Spring has Sprung in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex with the start of seasonal showers followed by warm blooms in temperatures and bright sunny days. Spring time is Termite time and the DFW area is no exception. Termites are swarming as they awaken from their winter dormancy and prepare for their annual search to establish a new base colony. Termites cause billions of dollars in damage to homes and businesses in the United States each year.

Termite Time in Dallas Fort Worth

In the Dallas Fort Worth area the majority of termite swarms are reported between the last week of March and the first week of May every year. Identifying termite swarmers is particularly important during this time of the year. Often mistaken for flying ants, the termite swarmers or elates are very dark in color, usually no longer than the width of your little finger, about as big around as a pencil lead, and have two pairs of wings. These insects lose their wings shortly after taking flight, so it is common to find this type of termite without wings.

Termite Behavior in Dallas Fort Worth

Worker termites prefer to stay in the soil within a dark humid environment. Their primary function is to dispose of dead decaying wood commonly found in nature on the ground. Termites actively seek out wood and are very capable of constructing protective mud tubes in order to access areas high above ground level such as your home or business. These mud tubes which are normally found on the outside of the foundation, emerging from plumbing penetrations, or coming through cracks in the slab are sometimes the only other indication that a structure is infested with termites.

Most plumbing penetrations that penetrate the slab foundation of a structure are located inside the walls which means that most termite infestations go undetected unless the swarmers emerge during the spring. This can lead to extensive damage if left unchecked. Applicators licensed for termite control by the Texas Department of Agriculture have been trained to identify the subtle signs these termites leave when invading a structure.

If you think that you have termites, don’t panic, termite swarmers do not bite or sting. However, a healthy sized colony of termites can in some cases include hundreds or thousands of swarmers which can be a significant nuisance when flying around indoors.

Its a good idea to get a zip-lock bag and scoop a few of the insects up for identification if you are unsure. Termite swarmers are a definite indication that the off-white workers are nearby eating the wood on your home or business.

Termite swarmers may resemble small dark-colored ants with wings. If you can save samples of the insects that you suspect to be termites, your Bullseye Pest Management Certified Applicator can confirm their identity when providing your Free Termite Inspection.

The termite swarmers only goal in life is to pair up and start another colony. This usually happens rather quickly and then the swarmers die off almost as fast as they appeared. Keep in mind that just because the swarmers are no longer present, does not mean the rest of the colony isn’t busy eating wood somewhere out of sight.

Termite swarmers will usually congregate around windows or lights in an attempt to reach the outside. If termites are present in your home or business take the time to educate yourself about the products commonly being used to treat for termite infestations, be sure to identify the pest correctly, and make a plan to protect your most significant investment.
